Let's talk flossing

Did you know that if you skip flossing you are missing out on cleaning a whopping 40% of your tooth surface? Keep that in mind for your next trivia night!

Unfortunately, you cant solely rely on brushing to completely clean your mouth. That little piece of minty fresh string plays an important part of your everyday oral health routine, it’s not just an optional extra that you throw in on date night.

Using floss to remove the build up between your teeth greatly helps with the prevention of gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath — that's a pretty good perk for an extra couple of minutes before bed.

Now, if you're like us, anything keeping you from your beauty sleep is a hindrance and not worth the time of day! So why not throw some floss around your gob in the morning? After lunch? When you're on the bus? Watching TV? Or walking the dog?

That last one was a joke, we actually recommend you watch where you're walking.

The point we are trying to make is this: flossing can seem like a tedious and time consuming job with no real benefits, but we promise you, it's not. If you take the time to include flossing in your oral health routine, your teeth and dentist will thank you, and your smile will be your best asset for many years to come.

So how do we floss properly?

We are more than happy to show you the correct flossing technique at your next check up.

In the meantime, here are some top tips:

  1. Wind approximately 45 cm of floss around your middle fingers and grip it tightly between your thumbs and index fingers.

  2. Keeping the thumb and index close together, gently guide the floss between the teeth, taking care not to cut or damage your gums with abrupt movement.

  3. Use a gentle up-and-down motion that goes down one side of the tooth, just under the little collar of gum and then back up the other side (the floss will make an on-the-side “c” shape).
